The Palmetum

One of the most exquisite properties on Nevis, this historic house has old-world elegance coupled with all the modern conveniences. The stone structure sits amongst a world-class collection of palms, gathered from throughout the world, making it the most unique assortment in the Caribbean. Built as the manager’s house for the original coconut plantation, the house was completely renovated a few years back with a glorious pool and wonderful hand-crafted Nevis furnishings. The property was formerly open to the public to view the palm collection, which was assembled by the original owner—an enthusiastic horticulturalist.

Construction: Hand-cut Nevisian stone with louvered shutters and lap board, originally built in the 1920s.

Living Room: This large sitting room, decorated with hand-crafted furnishings by Nevis joiner Patefield Hill, provides ample seating and opens to the spacious dining room with a wonderful mahogany table to seat 12. Pine floors throughout the house as well as ceiling fans.

Screened Porch: Stretched across the back of the house facing both St. Kitts, the sea, and the wonderful in-ground pool, the screened veranda has Nevis cut-stone floors, sofas, dining table to seat 10. At the front of the house is a second porch facing the palm gardens.

Kitchen: The wide, ample galley-style kitchen is decorated in bright tiles, and lovely cabinetry. Included is a range, refrigerator and dishwasher. Floors are old pine. Off the kitchen is a laundry room with washer/dryer and deep freezer and ample space for storage and leads out to the back yard.

Master Bedroom: The huge master bedroom includes a sleigh bed, walk-in closet with dressing area, and opens to a massive, newly-configured master bath with separate soaking tub, showers and vanities for two.

Guest Bedroom: Near the front of the house and connected to the front veranda, the guest room has two four-poster mahogany twin beds.

Guest Bedroom: On the seaside of the house, this room has a brass queen bed, and a lovely amoire with a hand-painted monkey.

Guest Bathroom: Serving the two guest rooms, this bath has a walk-in Nevis stone shower and vanity.

Chattel House: Near the back door is a traditional wooden Nevis-style chattel house that was once the laundry, but has been restored and could be put to many uses.

Apartment: This stone building has been renovated to include a one-bedroom apartment with sitting area and kitchen. There is another adjacent space that could be a second bedroom or put to other use.

Garage: Good for vehicle; can also store tools.

Pool: 20’ x 38’ in-ground pool built recently surrounded by Nevisian cut stone; outdoor shower nearby.
